Intro
Costa Rica is known for its stunning wildlife, and if you’re a nature lover like me, you’ll want to visit places that are a little off the beaten path. One such place is the Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo, a wildlife refuge that feels like a hidden gem, offering an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty. Here’s the story of my adventure there, complete with a surprise deal and incredible sightings.
Driving In & The Early Start
We arrived by car, which is really the only way to get around Costa Rica properly if you want the freedom to explore at your own pace. Renting a car is a must, especially for reaching less-touristy spots like Gandoca-Manzanillo.
We got there early, ready for the day, and had a little time to walk along the banks before anyone else showed up. Even then, the wildlife was already putting on a show: a few crocodiles basking in the sun, herons flying overhead, and howler monkeys calling from the treetops. Just wandering around like this was a perfect start to the morning.
Hunting for a Bargain Boat Tour
The usual boat tour price is around $60 per person, which felt way too steep for us. We had a specific plan: drive down, speak some Spanish, and see if we could work out a cheaper price. Turns out, it worked perfectly. Our Spanish definitely helped with the negotiations, we managed to secure the full boat tour for just $15 each.
What made it even better was knowing that the full money we paid went straight to the boat captain. Usually, a tour company takes the majority of the booking fee, leaving the captain with only a small cut. By booking directly with him, he actually earned more than he would have from a standard $60 tour, so yes, it was cheaper for us, but he benefited more too. Everyone wins.
Honestly, it was a steal, and it set the tone for what turned out to be an unforgettable wildlife adventure.

On the Water: Wildlife Everywhere
The boat tour itself was incredible, and we got even luckier when a tour guide joined us to explain everything along the way. Having someone knowledgeable to point out animals, explain their behaviour, and share little facts made the experience even richer.
The wildlife didn’t disappoint:
Crocodiles (Big & Small): Big crocs lounging on the banks and baby crocs hiding nearby seeing them so close up was thrilling.
Iguanas: Just chilling on branches, blending in perfectly with the lush jungle backdrop.
Howler Monkeys: Calling out from the treetops, their loud, echoing voices making the jungle feel alive.
Long-Nosed Bats: Hanging under trees, almost hidden in the shadows, a rare sighting.
Herons & Kingfishers: Elegant birds gliding along the water or perched perfectly for photos.
Common Basilisk: The “Jesus lizard” sprinting across the water, a classic Costa Rica moment.
Motmots: Flashing bright blue and green plumage as they perched and flew through the forest edges.
Other Birds: Snail kites, hawks, and various waders along the riverbanks, making every turn a surprise.
Every twist of the river brought something new, monkeys swinging, birds calling, crocs sunbathing and having the guide explain it all made the experience unforgettable.
