Who are the Mentawai?

The Mentawai also known as the “Flower People,” are among the oldest tribes in the whole of Indonesia. They reside on the island of Siberut within the aptly named Mentawai Islands, which is a chain of islands located approximately 150km off the western coast of Sumatra. According to researchers, their ancestors have lived on the islands since 500 BC. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a contact that was able to organize going over to visit and live with the Mentawai. I can honestly say it was one of the most incredible and fascinating experiences of my entire life. I was extremely humbled to be asked back by one shaman, and believe me, I plan on returning when possible.
